Students from teacher Erica Hudson’s transitional kindergarten class at Hooker Oak Elementary School file past the 1962 Volkswagen van, whose owner, Bob Gamette, is sitting next to the open door with a navy blue cap, in Chico, California on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023.

Hooker Oak student Trevor Cardenas peeks out from inside the van.

The display was part of the school’s 75th anniversary celebration, highlighting one decade of the school’s existence each month. This is the month honoring the 1960s.

Gamette, a retired Chico Unified School District principal, bought the van new at Carlson Brothers in San Francisco for $2,100. It now has 200,000 miles on it, he said.
