A look at some of the top games for Press-Telegram area teams in the CIF-SS quarterfinals Friday.
CIF-SS QUARTERFINALS
DIVISION 1
SAN CLEMENTE (9-1) AT ST. JOHN BOSCO (9-1)
Where, when: St. John Bosco High, 7 p.m.
Analysis: St. John Bosco is the defending Division 1 champion and is the No. 1 seed in the bracket this year. Caleb Sanchez threw for 396 yards and six touchdowns in Bosco’s week 10 win over Orange Lutheran. Max Amasio had three sacks for the Bosco defense and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa had 10 tackles. San Clemente was the South Coast League champion this season and is one of just two public schools in the Division 1 playoffs. Aiden Rubin broke the school’s rushing record with 1,738 yards and tied the school record with 22 touchdowns. Puka Fuimaono leads the defense along with top junior recruit Matai Tagoa’i. St. John Bosco beat San Clemente 56-6 the last time these teams met in the Division 1 playoffs in 2018.
DIVISION 2
LOS ALAMITOS (9-2) VS. SERRA (8-3)
Where, when: Serra High, 7 p.m.
Analysis: Los Alamitos convincingly beat Upland in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs. USC commit Isaiah Rubin had two interceptions and returned one 65 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Josh Tuchek blocked a punt and Jackson Bennett returned a fumble for a touchdown. The Griffins allowed 155 rushing yards to Upland’s Arturu Alonso in the first half but held him to one yard in the second half. Serra dominated Bishop Amat in round one with a dominant performance from Zacharyus Williams. The senior had two receiving touchdowns and a 93-yard kick return for a touchdown. San Jose State commit Cincere Rhaney ran for 155 yards with two touchdowns and is averaging nearly 10 yards per carry this season.
DIVISION 8
ST. ANTHONY (9-2) AT ST. PIUS X-ST. MATTHIAS (5-5)
Where, when: St. Pius X-St. Matthias High, 7 p.m.
Analysis: The Del Rey League foes played earlier this season for the league championship when St. Anthony beat St. Pius 21-14 in overtime on Sept. 29. Adrian Perez threw two touchdown passes to Jasiah Lolesio-Pua for St. Anthony in that game and Jojo Apisala ran for a touchdown. Brady Shaffer ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Jaylen Stokes. St. Anthony narrowly beat Tahquitz in the first round with a touchdown run from Apisala in the final minute. St. Pius routed Barstow 42-21. Both teams turned the ball over multiple times in the first matchup and whoever turns the ball over less may win this one.
DIVISION 14
WHITTIER CHRISTIAN (7-4) VS. LYNWOOD (6-5)
Where, when: Lynwood High, 7 p.m.
Analysis: This is a rematch of the 2022 Division 14 championship game in which Whittier Christian beat Lynwood 20-7. Lynwood beat Webb in the first round on a game-winning touchdown run with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Tyrus Taylor and Jordan Sewell both get playing time at quarterback for the Knights. Lynwood’s defense forced an interception and two fumbles in its first round win. Whittier Christian is the defending Division 14 champion and beat Duarte 41-14 in the first round. Jake Martinez is one of the leading senior rushers in Orange County and Caleb Merr threw for 197 yards with four touchdowns against Duarte. Martinez ran for 181 yards with two touchdowns against Lynwood in last year’s championship game.
