Sports briefs: League champions Redwood, MA advance at NCS tennis

MCAL champion Redwood High, the third seed, shut out No. 14 seed Alameda, 7-0, during Tuesday’s first round of the North Coast Section Division I girls tennis team tournament in Larkspur. The Giants are scheduled to host No. 6 Mission San Jose on Thursday.

• Tamalpais, the No. 15 seed, fell to Diablo Athletic League champion Miramonte, the second seed, 7-0, on Tuesday in Orinda. The Red-tailed Hawks’ No. 2 doubles pair of Natalie Popper and Louise McGinness offered a strong challenge before falling 7-6, 7-5.

• No. 5 seed Marin Academy defeated No. 12 Arcata, 6-1, during the first round of the NCS D-II team tournament in San Anselmo on Tuesday. The BCL champion Wildcats are scheduled to face either No. 4 Branson or No. 13 Albany on Thursday.

• Marin Catholic, the 14th seed in the NCS D-II bracket, fell to No. 3 Piedmont, 7-0, in Tuesday’s opening round.
