The activities marked Native American Heritage Month by joining students with Native American cultural educators. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians sponsored the event, called California’s First Cultures: A Celebration.

It was part of the Waa’t Celebration and included elementary school students from Redlands, Calimesa, Banning and Yucaipa.

Assemblymember James Ramos, D-San Bernardino, San Manuel’s tribal unity and cultural awareness coordinator, said Wednesday, Nov. 8, that education is a way to dispel myths and misconceptions that some may have about Native Americans.

In the Serrano language, “Waa’t” means juniper, which relates to the Juniper trees in the Crafton Hills area of Yucaipa.

“It’s all the more meaningful to be here in a city named for the Serrano village of Yukaipa’t and during November, which is National Native American Heritage month,” Ramos said. “This event honors our elders and ancestors for their resiliency through history.”
